Lloyd’s Special Brew: Division 1 – lets go!

6th February, 2024 | News | 0 comments

I’m proud to be penning this first solo Lloyd’s Special Brew as a Division One coach.

It’s a great honour and one which simply wouldn’t have been possible without the exceptional efforts of the players.

They put their trust in me and the coaches and invested the time and effort needed to achieve our first goal – reaching the top five.

One thing I want to shine a light on that may have gone under the radar, at the end of NWBA Phase One the Brewers had the best defence in the league, by some way.

That has always been our starting point as, it is often said, offense wins games but defence wins championships.

Our defence has put us in position to fight for a championship and I think we are all itching to get back onto the court to see what the rest of the season holds.

I have to admit the break came at precisely the wrong time for us. We had momentum and confidence was flying but it’s the same for everyone and we don’t make excuses, we work hard and get back on it.

We have a tough start to the Division One campaign, at home to Ellesmere Port Panthers. They are a skilled, experienced group of players but there are no easy games now. We have to face them some time and it will be an interesting yardstick for us.

Speaking of interesting, I have to shout out those players who have been stepping up to the Brewers team from Brewers Lite. When we set up the development team we knew we wanted a pathway to the first team, but the way some players – including those taking their first steps into adult basketball – have stepped up and made a real valuable contribution is fantastic to see.

Our strategic approach to coaching ‘the Brewers Way’ has quickly given us a talent pool that gives us depth and that either coach can have full trust in on the court. It’s incredible and a testament to everyone on and off-court who has bought into how we want to play.

This is an exciting time to be at the club and people want to be a part of it. Recently we brought in long-time friend of the club Hannah Aldridge as a player – our first female player since Leila Benyahia back in 2016.

The Brewers welcome anyone who loves the game and the club is growing. If you want to be a part of what we are building, get in touch. The Brewers family always has room for one more!
