With the 2023/24 season finally upon us, there is an air of optimism around the Brewers camp with lots of new things happening in and around the club.
The biggest news is the creation of our development team, Brewers Lite. Our long-term mission has always to provide a place for people of any ability or experience to play and this is a vital stage on that journey. We have had lots of enquires from people looking to get into the game – or get back into the game – and Brewers Lite is the ideal vehicle for us to enable that.
Led by one of our veteran players, Ben Scott and with a sprinkling of experienced players (myself included) to help the transition into competitive basketball, Brewers Lite is already paying dividends to the club as a whole, with several of the new players already looking capable of stepping up into the Brewers and potentially securing the future of tbe club for many years to come.
Speaking of the Brewers, we have been blessed by being able to retain the majority of the squad from last season which has helped our preseason plans. We have added to the main group and will be introducing some of our new faces over the next few weeks, but I’m excited for the coming season especially with the new league format.
For those who don’t know, the North Wales League this year will see all teams play each other once before splitting into two five-team conferences. Within these conferences teams will play each other twice with the top conference competing for the playoffs and the lower conference for their own title. This should make for a more competitive NWBA
I mentioned before how Ben has taken the reigns of Brewers Lite, I have also made an addition to the Brewers’ coaching staff. Joining Terrence McGuire esq as Assistant Coach is Niel Gillard. Players’ Player of the Year in 2023 and top scorer from last season, Niel brings vast basketball experience, having played in the BBL with Cheshire Jets/Phoenix and played for the University of Chester Basketball team. He has worked alongside some of the best players to grace the UK shores and established an impressive reputation as a competitor in his own right and I’m looking forward to working with both Terrence and Niel to push us forward this season.
After a successful debut season as Captain, Coaches’ Player of the Year Dave Thomas returns as Club Captain. He has the intensity and passion that drives this team forward and it was an easy choice to keep the armband on Dave. I look forward to seeing him lead the team forward this season
We couldn’t run the club without the support from our sponsors. LMC Lighting & Electrical Services remain our main partners this season and their support was critical to our decision to launch Brewers Lite. As usual they have backed us to the hilt and as well as sponsoring the Brewers, they also agreed to sponsor and purchase a new (stunning) kit for Brewers Lite. I’d personally like to thank Steve and the team at LMC for their continued support.
Growing the club has meant we needed to secure another key partner, so we were thrilled to announce that Admiral Taverns have joined the Brewers family from this season. They have been incredibly supportive and engaged from the start and we hope you’ll all welcome them. Visit their website and social media to find your local Admiral Tavern and pay them a visit, whether for a drink of a bite to eat.
The launch of the Brewers Lite kit marked the extension of our Official Kit Partnership with Triple Double Hoopwear. We may be biased, but we believe that Triple Double are making the best kits in the game at the moment and we’re proud to work with them to keep the Brewers looking the sharpest side in North Wales. Keep your eyes peeled as we hope to make some of their designs available later this season.
Finally, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks to long-time partner Quarry & Castle Business Improvement Consultancy. For many years they have provided technical support, giving us this website as a portal to speak to you, our amazing community and to promote the club and the sport.
Their advice and support is crucial to the growth of the club and we would like to thank Mark and the Quarry team for all their support.
I cannot wait to start this season which, for me, is year two of this team’s development. If we can put in the performances I know we are capable of, we will have another successful season.
Brewers Basketball is all about the community and increasing the profile of local league basketball, we welcome you all to come to Blacon High to watch either the Brewers or Brewers Lite, all fixtures are on our homepage. We look forward to seeing you there.
