NWBA: Bromborough Bulldogs 49 Brewers 58

21st December, 2023 | News | 0 comments

The latest chapter of a storied rivalry spanning two leagues and more than 10 years erupted at South Wirral High School, as the Brewers ended 2023 with a victory over the Bromborough Bulldogs.

In a tight opening quarter the sides traded baskets with neither team going on a real run. By the first break the Bulldogs were up by two points 14-12.

It was in the second quarter that the Brewers cranked things up. With MVP Luke Sharland-Wong (9pts), Niel Gillard (11pts) Dave Thomas (6pts) and Ben Scott creating a foundation, Alex Jones and Easaw George went off, Jones lighting up from three point range and George not far behind as the Brewers raced to a 23-9 quarter and a decent half-time lead.

The Brewers have been here before in this venue against this team and seen the win slip through their fingers – but this time they were prepared.

The Bulldogs did battle back in the third, making a series of switches as they looked for a way to consistently break the Brewers down. They did enjoy some success too, closing the gap a little and setting up a Christmas cracker of a fourth quarter to finish off the year.

However, the visiting Brewers did not get the memo about the Season of Giving, and they gave nothing, coming out hard to push for the win and secure a vital victory in their hunt for a top five spot.

Afterwards Head Coach Adam Lloyd said: “That was one of our best wins this season. The points were spread out, the plays worked and the effort levels were through the roof.

“We went up against a tough side on a tough court – and those who know will understand how difficult that court is to play on! So many times there we have ben unlucky or come up short but not today. Every player on the court and on our bench was 100% committed to every play. The Bulldogs worked hard but we never allowed ourselves to be outworked.

“That was a fantastic way to end 2023 and we all can’t wait for 2024 to get going.

“Just finally thank you to all our supporters, sponsors and of course the players who played or trained with us in 2023. You have all been a part of this process and a part of making 2023 a fantastic year for the Brewers and Brewers Lite.

“Merry Christmas to you all and we hope you have a wonderful New Year – we’ll certainly try to do our bit to make 2024 a great one for the Brewers family!”
