NWBA: Mold Magic 69 Brewers 53

6th May, 2023 | News | 0 comments

The Brewers penultimate game of the season saw fifth place still mathematically within their grasp so they set out to take the game to a Mold side that had already secured a top-four berth.

Having really found their feet this season, the Brewers asked real questions of Mold, matching them score-for-score for most of the opening stanza as they went into the first break trailing by just three points.

Dave Thomas set the tone, crashing the boards for the visitors and facilitating plays to pick out long-range shooting from Wissam Elkak and MVP Niel Gillard with big men Ben Scott and Jose Gonzalez feeding inside.

By half time the Brewers only trailed by seven, but achieving that came at a price. The Brewers efforts to stay in the game worked up to this point but saw them start to get into foul trouble.

The third was a quiet scoring period, with Mold only extending their lead by another four points, but the Brewers laid it all on the line to try to close the gap – Gonzalez and Thomas both picking up knocks that took them out for periods.

In the fourth quarter the Brewers’ fouls finally caught up with them as three players – Thomas, Scott and Gonzalez – all picked up their fifth fouls.

Losing their first-choice big men plus their captain should have left the Brewers hung out to dry, but this new generation of players don’t know when to quit.

They continued to battle to the end, only lising the final quarter by three points. This season the Brewers, under Head Coach Adam Lloyd, have proved they can hang with the best in this league. With one final league game left before the post season, against Ellesmere Port Panthers, there is still plenty to play for this season.
