NWBA: Wrexham Raiders 47 Brewers 80

24th November, 2022 | News | 0 comments

With their biggest win since 2018, Brewers Basketball clocked up their second successive victory on the road at Wrexham Raiders.

The game was rearranged with Brewers home venue closing for exams, so the visitors were are an extra disadvantage coming into the match.

But confident after their first win against Bulldogs and after a couple of intense training sessions, the Brewers were quickly out of the blocks.

With some onlookers questioning the quality of the Brewers, they had a point to prove and a 12-2 stretch to open the game set the tone as they clocked up an impressive 32-13 first-quarter lead.

The intensity dropped a little in the second but the Brewers were able to slightly extend their lead ahead of their fabled ‘third quarter of doom’.

Except that on this day it was different. The third quarter saw them come out incredibly strong, even with big man Jose Gonzalez carrying a hand injury.

With hustle across the board, a commandingn performance from centre Luke Sharland-Wong and some well-executed plays, the Brewers hit their rhythm and won the quarter 16-9.

There was no let-up in the final period as, leading 59-32, the Brewers kept up the pressure to close out a strong win.

“That has been coming,” said Brewers Head Coach Adam Lloyd. “Firstly we want to thank Wrexham for getting this game on after our venue became unavailable at the last-minute.

“But I really want to praise our lads. Every single one of them did a job on the floor. We never took a step back, we took it to our opponents and they really tried to test us – they switched up on offence and tried to get their main weapons open, we just didn’t let them do it.

“Two wins on the bounce – and a scoreline like that – are things we’ve not seen here for a while, so the rest of the season is going to be really exciting!”
